What Is RSS Feed And Why Use It?

By Pinyo • Oct 6th, 2007 • Category: Miscellaneous

Don’t worry, I am not going to become a meta-blogger (people who blog about blogging). Being a Personal Finance Blogger, I am not sure if all my readers all know what RSS Feed is and why they should use it?

What is RSS feed?

RSS is a standardized formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. An RSS document, which is called a “feed,” “web feed,” or “channel,” contains either a summary of content or the full text.

The orange icon below usually represents link to the RSS feed.

And the clicket below represents how many people are currently reading my blog through their feed reader:

Why use it?

RSS makes it easier to keep up with multiple web sites without manually visiting each site. By using software such as Google Reader, you can add multiple blogs to your reader and read all of them from there! Below is a screen shot of my Google Reader with multiple blogs listed on the lower left corner.

Google Reader

Since I have full feed, you can read all my posts without ever coming to my site; unless you want to leave a comment.

How do I get started?

1. Go to my feed page: http://www.moolanomy.com/feed
2. At the top of the page select Google and click on the Subscribe Now button

3. Click on Add to Google Reader

Add To Google Reader

4. If you already have a Google Reader account, you’re done (you may have to sign in).
5. If you don’t have an account, click on the Create an account now link.

So, don’t wait any longer, please subscribe to my feed.

If you are still uncomfortable with the process, you can always subscribe via email and get daily email instead.

Helpful, thanks. Since Google Reader made those changes recently, I’ve been having trouble adding new feeds. :-)

RSS can be very important to some websites and other it doesnt matter much at all. I think that is one thing to keep in mind.

@Mrs Micah - thank you. I haven’t run into any problem with Google Reader. Please send me an email and I can try to help.

@Mike C - True. But I think for blogs, RSS feed is vital.
