Moolanomy weekly roundup #4: “Retirement” edition

August 19, 2007 by Pinyo.

This week roundup will focus on the subject of retirement. Something I look forward to hopefully sooner rather than later. The way I see it is that you can truly retire until you achieve financial independence; and that is what I want.

Financial Dominance wrote What Do I Need to Retire? and share with us things that differentiate people who end up living comfortably in retirement, and those who struggle with debt their entire life and into retirement. Do you want to know what it is? Give it a read.

If retirement seems like a thousand miles away and you do not know where to start, you should read Gather Little By Little’s Frugal Wealth Building - How To Build Your Wealth Cheaply. I think this is the perfect starting point for anyone that is just starting out, and also a great refresher for anyone that is already making the journey.

Do you feel like you never have enough money to invest for retirement? What if I tell you that you can save a cool half million for the price of a coffee and a muffin a day. You do not believe me that it is possible? Then head over to Saving Explained and find out how. If coffee and muffin are not your things, you can do the same by skipping out on a few cigarettes and beers — there are tons of other options for you to choose from.

Do you know why it is important to invest your money in the stock market, and not leaving it in saving account earning a few percents? Plonkee Money wrote about one of the biggest money risk (inflation), in the post called understanding of inflation rising?.

Are you concerned about recent volatility in the stock market and the few days of sharp decline we have seen of late? Why does this trouble you if you do not need the money at least several years or decades from now? I think Paid Twice has the right idea when it comes to falling market and investing for retirement. The name of the post said it all: If I had any money I’d be investing in retirement.

You have been diligently contributing money to your 401k for the past 10 years. You made many sacrificed to contribute the full amount allowed by the law each year. Do you ever wonder how you are doing compare to other people? Well, wonder no more because Money and Such did some digging and gave us some solid numbers in How Is My 401K Doing?

Now that you know how you are doing against other people in your office, do you know that not all 401(k) plans are the same? Personal Finance Advice gives us five issues everyone should know.

We keep talking about 401k, how about IRA? Good thing Blueprint for Financial Prosperity anticipated this question and wrote Six Roth IRA and 401K Questions Everyone Asks. I always wondered if I should put more into my 401k or contribute to my Roth IRA? I think that is a pretty good answer.

Last but not least, Don’t Mess With Taxes wrote Dough D’ohs! — a different look at retirement. Neat!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and see you again Monday.
