Weekend Reading: September 1, 2008
Wow August went by very fast! Since we are enjoying our Labor Day holiday in the U.S., I’ll skip my regular article and give you a short list of great articles that hit the top of PF Buzz this past week
- When Does Intellectual Curiosity Stop? at Brip Blap — Do you still read books simply for pleasure? Brip Blap recounts his younger years and wonders why 58% of the US adult population never reads another book after high school.
- Back to the basics of saving money at Gather Little By Little — Initially, I was tempted to say I doubt anyone need a primer on saving money. But considering that our national savings rate in the negative, we probably need more articles like this one.
- Six sure fire ways for college students to ruin their financial future at Saving To Invest – Some great financial advice for college students. I wish I knew a lot of these when I was in college.
- People Here Don’t Give A Crap What Kind Of Car We Drive at My Two Dollars — David shares a nice personal story that could have profound impact on your life.
- Don’t Pay Your Children’s College Tuition If You Want Them to Succeed at One Caveman’s Financial Journey – Personally, I don’t agree 100% with the article, but it does a good job of highlighting some of the key decisions. My parents helped me through college, and I am planning to do the same for my son via 529 plan and a lot of father-to-son financial education.
- What Is Raising A Child Worth – We’re Going To One Income at Free From Broke — A couple perspective on whether or not mom should go back to work, or stay at home.
- Passive Income Also Means Patient Income! at The Financial Blogger — I mentioned several times before that it takes time and effort to build you income streams. This article shares that same thought and provides a great definition of passive income: “it’s an alternative source of income where your earnings are not linked to an hourly rate but rather on its capacity of creating wealth.”
- The Retirement Perspective: Today’s Dollars Are Far More Valuable Than Tomorrow at The Simple Dollar – Trent puts retirement savings goal into perspective. Is $2 million dollars a lot of money? It may seems so now, but it will not be that much money in 30-40 years.
- Does money buy happiness? In short, yes at Brunette on a Budget – Old question, but the answer is different with a nice twist to it.
- 45 Ways to Earn Some Extra Money at Borrow From None – A nice compilation of ways to earn extra money.
That’s it for now. Have a great Labor Day!
