Better Health and Finances With 100 Push Ups

By Pinyo • Jun 20th, 2008 • Category: Miscellaneous

I was adding a few sites to PF Buzz Planet yesterday, and stumbled upon a web site called One Hundred Push Ups (via Too Smart To Live Like This). This is a timely find since I have been thinking about getting back in shape lately. To tell you the truth, I am feeling guilty about not doing any exercise over the past few years — yes, years!

One Hundred Push Ups

I haven’t signed up for their 100 push ups challenge yet, but I started the week 1 day 1 program today. Unfortunately, I was four push ups short of completing the week 1 day 1 program, which asked for at least 41 push ups. As a result, I’ll be repeating it on Saturday. I am positive that I am going to stick with this 6 weeks program because I’d love to be able to do 100 push ups in one shot. May be I’ll post a weekly update to keep me honest and on track.

Good For Your Health, Good For Your Finances

Exercise is not only good for your health, but it’s also good for your finances. If you don’t believe me, Mighty Bargain Hunter just wrote about Ten ways being fat costs money yesterday — a very interesting read.

One of the points he made was about life insurance premium. As you know, I am in the process of buying a term-life insurance policy. I know this exercise won’t help me now, but if I qualify for the preferred health class, I could save about 30% off the monthly premium (I don’t recall the exact numbers) — that’s a lot of savings! I guess I could always defer buying the policy if I didn’t qualify for the health discount.

More importantly, I am 34 years old and my son is only 6 months old. I have to get in shape to keep up with him when he grows a little older. I don’t want to be an out of shape 40 years old and not being able to give my son the love and attention he deserved.

If you are interested in the program, please check it out — One Hundred Push Ups. We can help each other by sharing our progress weekly. It’s always easier when you have a few friends along for the journey.

Pinyo - J.D. started this on his fitness blog about a week or so ago, and it been going semi-viral. I posted on it here, and I know Flexo, Pete at Bible Money Matters, L_buckets, J.D. and a handful of others are doing it too.

I did complete the first day on the last column, but I have been too sore to be able to do day two!

I found the site via Twitter (maybe it was Pete). It looks interesting. I tested myself yesterday. Now I gotta see if I can keep up on the program.

I had shoulder surgery last year and I have been reluctant to try much of anything with weights. This looks like something I could do to rebuild the lost strength, but it will be a while before I can get close to 100!

If you reach your 100 push-up goal and feel like spring boarding to something else you might look at http://www.crossfit.com. They publish a daily workout, blog style. In the 5 months I’ve been doing it I’ve gotten stronger and faster and knocked and dropped a pant size. The program is real big in the military, law enforcement, and martial arts. The constantly varying workouts keeps things interesting and if you actually do most of the exercises with a fairly inexpensive home gym if you don’t want to join a gym.

Also on the life insurance if you end up losing any weight because of this then be sure and talk to your independent agent about the weight loss. Sometimes insurance companies will ask if you’ve lost more than X pounds in the past Y months. Mostly they are looking for people who have lost weight because of a decline in health not an improvement in health, but they are also wary of people who lose a bunch of weight just to get their life insurance and then balloon back up.

Good luck on your quest for 100.

I tried it, but I could only do 30 push ups. My guess is that it would take me 6-months to get up to 100. Gone are the days of football practice, when I had 3- hours a day to spend on my fitness.

I am definitely going to do this. I snuck a peak at the week 6 workout and my chest hurts just thinking about it. I like to think I’m in pretty good shape, but those last 2 weeks are hardcore.

@Michael-I have friends that got certified by Crossfit. I’m in good shape but those guys are intense!

I see getting fit as more than just a money saver. It gives you more energy to get things done.

One thing that wasn’t mentioned in Mighty Bargain Hunter’s article was how being fit (or fat) affects the way people treat you. You have a significant advantage in almost all interpersonal interactions. You are more likely to get hired or land the big promotion. Your customers are more willing to buy from you. Your coworkers treat you with more respect.

This site seems to be “all the rage” lately. I heard about it from The Happy Rock on Twitter and decided to do it - and now your post…

It’s a PF Blogger Fitness Revolution!

Let’s all keep each other motivated. I’m on Day 3 today of the “10 pushups or more” column… So far so good. Not too badly sore yet. :)

It’s awesome that’s so many people are doing it.

@Lisa — you are doing really well. I think my arms are about to fall off and it looks like I need a few more days rest before redoing week 1 day 1 again.

I’m starting tonight with day one of the challenge. I read about it on the happy rock i believe… My initial test was pretty pathetic, only 10 pushups, so I’ve got a long way to go.

I’m committed though, i’m going to do this!

Not so great :-) I attempted week 3 at the highest column and the middle column, but I’ll have to drop down to the easiest column. My progress have been slower than the standard 6 weeks.

Good to see other people doing the one hundred pushups challenge!

    My progress is here. http://www.fivezerofive.com/ma.....temid=1461

I’m still stuck on getting started with week 5 due to my hectic schedule, lack of sleep, and just plain being tired from running and biking.

    Ah, I’m famous! :)

I think I have 7 others listed on the “did the hundred” page on http://www.hundredpushups.com

I was expecting a few more considering the popularity of the web site. Maybe more have done it, but are not aware of the bragging rights page?

    Keep up the good work!

@Steve — I completed week 3. It has been slow going and I’ve dropped down from column 3 to column 1. If I can’t finish a day, I repeat it until I could.
