To help you make the most of your 2009 taxes, here are some tax tips to help you organize, prepare, and take advantage of the available tax deductions and tax credits for 2009 tax year. Instead of trying to compile my own list, I reached out to a few personal finance bloggers to share their best tax tips for 2009. By the way, make sure you read through to the end because there are some great giveaways from TurboTax and H&R Block.
Now for the fun part! A couple of weeks ago, the nice folks at Intuit TurboTax invite a few bloggers in the Washington DC area to a party to kick off the new tax season. At the end of the evening, I was given some TurboTax gift cards to share with you. Separately, the folks at H&R Block also sent me their H&R Block at Home software (formerly known as TaxCut) and a few H&R Block at Home coupons to share.
As such, I’ll be selecting 1 winner over the next 5 days to either receive the TurboTax gift card or the H&R Block at Home coupon.
The rule is very simple: Share a tax tip, a tax story, a TurboTax review, or a H&R Block at Home review in the comment section below. And some time during the day, from Monday through Friday, I’ll announce one winner each day.
Please make sure you’re in the U.S. and are planning to file your own taxes. There’s no point in wining the prize if you’re not going to use it.
The TurboTax Gift Cards are provided by Intuit. The card is for TurboTax Premier Federal & State Returns Online only (approximately $87 value). The Premier version is designed for tax filers who has a lot of investments and own rental properties.
You can use TurboTax online for free and do not have to pay until you print or efile. To use the gift card:

This code can only be redeemed once and is only valid through the 2009 tax season. Codes may not be redeemed for cash and are not for resale. Lost or stolen cards will not be replaced.
The H&R Block at Home coupons are provided by H&R Block. The coupon is for H&R Block at Home Online Tax Preparation (approximately $150 value).

One additional tip to add to your list: if you find yourself in a jam and just can’t finish your taxes on time, you have the option of filing a tax extension (IRS Form 4868). That gives you an extra six months (Until October 10) to file. It does not, however, give you more time to pay what you owe. The payment deadline is still April 15.
I’ve been using TurboTax for 4 years and I love it! What I appreciate most is:
1. My information is saved by TT and I don’t have to retype the same things every year.
2. They keep my old returns on file and I can grab a copy any time I want.
3. They find tax deductions that I otherwise would not have found on my own.
This will be the year that I *finally* do my own taxes. It’s cheaper for one and I hear good things about Turbo Tax. My Mom swears by it.
When I used to work for a political campaign, I was contracted out. My employer stated at the time that it was actually more advantageous to do that. I saved *all* of my receipts and actually did pretty well come tax time.
I save all receipts that are work related.
That said, I hope I win because I will definitely use it and it will help me save even more money.
Brian is our first winner! Congratulation.
Wes is our second winner! Congratulation.
Pinyo, great resource and giveaway! I’ll be sure to share it with my readers.
(and please don’t enter me to the drawing – I have an accountant do my taxes!).
I’ve been using Turbo Tax for over 5 years. Before that, I did my taxes the old fashioned way (as a kid right out of high school)! Turbo Tax is so handy and reliable. I love it! Thanks for the giveaway!
Great list – it’s in my next roundup.
Henria is our third winner! Congratulation.
Thank you so much for picking me as your next winner! I am soo grateful! I can’t wait to get started!
Julie is our fourth winner! Congratulation.
I have been using TaxCut software to prepare my taxes since 2000. It’s very easy to use and it’s less expensive that TurboTax…and definitely cheaper than hire a professional! I’d love to win the H&R Block at Home and give it a try. It would be my first time doing my taxes online.
Paul is our final winner! Congratulation.
I’m interested in the H&R Block at Home $150 coupon since one of the winners didn’t claim H&R Block at Home $150 coupon.
